About Sterling Price

Sterling Price spent the last 30 years broadening his HR experience by assuming roles of

increasing responsibility in the healthcare and aerospace industries. This experience has

included being Managing Director of an HR Consulting team, owning an OD consulting company,

and holding the positions of Vice President and Director of HR for two Fortune 500 healthcare



In his role as VP of HR for Magellan Health Services, Sterling led a team that provided general HR

support to over 5500 employees located in 50 states. While in this position, he touched all areas

of HR, including executive coaching, employee relations, and process improvement. Besides

overseeing the activities of his Generalist team, Sterling acted as the principal support to the

Corporate Office executives. This included oversight of the recruiting of all executives in the

company. Additionally, Sterling oversaw the establishment of an HR Service Center that acted as

a clearinghouse for HR support to the field. This highly successful endeavor resulted in increased

capacity for the core HR team and a better connection to his customer base.


Prior to working for Magellan, Sterling spent 10 years as a Director of HR for Correctional

Medical Services. In this capacity, he had the opportunity to negotiate union contracts, develop

and deliver leadership training, and partner in the development of a corporate-wide Human

Performance initiative that identified, and developed the top leadership performers in the



Sterling was the founder and principal for The Performance Partners, an HR consulting company.

In this role, he developed and delivered leadership training, conducted process improvement

efforts that resulted in significant productivity gains, performed executive coaching, lead

companies through strategic planning, and helped change the work culture of a 100-year-old

family-owned business.


Sterling holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in Organizational

Psychology from the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He is a former adjunct

professor in the Human Resources Masters program at Webster University. Sterling is a member

of the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the St. Louis Human Resources

Management Association.

• Behavioral Interviewing Project

Situation: One of the largest construction engineering companies in the world was having problems successfully hiring people, particularly engineers, who could work in their unique environment.

Action: Using functional competencies we helped them identify, I developed a complete selection process for their HR staff and hiring managers that showed them how to hire the right person by identifying not only the appropriate technical skills but cultural fit.

Result: This process was turned into a class that I delivered in numerous U. S. locations, plus London, England. I also developed and delivered a train-the-trainer class so others could be certified to roll it out to company locations across the globe.


• Process Improvement - Product Redesign

Situation: Performed work for a 140 year old family owned business that built machines that crush tires and wood for recycling. The crushing machines had been built the same way for more than 50 years.

Action: Led a process improvement team that redesigned two of their crushing machines. The team consisted of two shop floor employees, a design engineer, a marketing person and a parts expert.

Result: The redesigns cut out 25% and 27% of the cost to build them, with no change in their capacity. This added thousands of dollars to the company's bottom line every time they sold a machine.


• Personnel Policy Revision

Situation: A hospital in Maryland had more than 100 personnel policies in multiple data bases that spanned the last 20 years. Many of the policies were irrelevant, redundant, and in some cases illegal. Mangers couldn't find the right policies, and were confused by conflicting policies.

Action: We eliminated unnecessary, conflicting and illegal policies, rewrote outdated policies, created needed policies, and combined policies where appropriate.

Result: There were significantly fewer policies that could be understood, and easily found in one location. The feedback from management was extremely positive.
